Lexaprо is an antidepressant, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. An inhibition of the serotonin reuptake leads to the increase of the concentration of this neurotransmitter in the synaptic cleft, increases and prolongs its action and significantly improves an emotional stability of a human.
The use of Lexaprо is accompanied by the improved mood, reduced panic attacks, and increase of the vital energy. Lexaprо is used for the treatment of depression, panic disorders and states when an inhibited state of the central nervous system is observed. This antidepressant acts softly, so that a therapeutic effect develops slowly. Patients usually do not see the improvements within the first week. In 10-14 days of the regular use of the pills, changes happen.
A therapeutic effect is kept only during a long-term treatment. If the treatment is stopped during the first improvement of the disease symptoms, depression will reoccur and may be even severer than it was before the treatment. Therefore, if you have decided to take Lexaprо, stick to the complete course of the treatment – at least 3 months.
A standard therapeutic dose of Lexaprо is 20 mg per day for most patients. The treatment is started from this dose. A stable therapeutic effect will appear in 2-3 weeks, and a daily dose may be changed in a month.
If the depression symptoms are reduced in 4-6 weeks, a daily dose of Lexaprо may be reduced up to 10 mg per day. A maintenance therapy may take up to 6 months with the use of a low dose. If the therapeutic effect becomes worse after the reduction of the dose, and the depression symptoms have reoccurred, it is necessary to increase a daily dose.
- To stop the treatment, a dose of Lexaprо should be reduced within 1-2 weeks in order to avoid the appearance of the withdrawal syndrome. At first, the dose is reduced to 10 mg per day, and then in week 5 mg is used, and then the use of the pills is completely stopped
- If you are taking or have taken MAO inhibitors, at least 2 weeks should pass in order to start taking Lexaprо
- Lexaprо is an antidepressant what must not be combined with other drugs of the analogical action. A serotonin syndrome may appear due to the increased action of Citalopram
- Lexaprо is not prescribed for the treatment of depression in patients under 15 years old, pregnant women, and old patients over 70 years old
The side effects of Lexaprо often appear on the first or second week of the treatment and are light. They do not cause discomfort and do not require a cessation of the treatment. The side effects of Lexaprо grow during the overdose. The symptoms of the overdose are: tremor, agitation, drowsiness, convulsive attacks, tachycardia, respiratory depression, and vomiting.
There is no specific antidote for the overdose. It will be enough to do stomach lavage and seek for a medical aid. A medical specialist will monitor the functions of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and will provide an adequate therapy.
