Maxalt is an urgent aid during migraine outbreak. The drug reduces the symptoms of migraine and reduces an intensity of headache.
Rizatriptan is an active ingredient. This ingredient has a unique ability to reduce the symptoms of migraine during the outbreak. Rizatriptan is ineffective as a preventive product. It cannot prevent a development of the outbreak because all causes of the migraine development are not known.
A severe headache is caused by edema of the blood vessels in the brain and its tissues. Using Maxalt, a stimulation of certain serotonin receptors happens within 10-15 minutes, and the blood vessels are narrowed, the blood circulation is regulated in the brain, and the migraine symptoms are reduced.
A therapeutic effect of Maxalt may be felt in 20-30 minutes after the use of a dose. At first, prodrome (one of the migraine symptoms) is reduced, and then headache, nausea, eye tension are gone. The use of the drug does not completely reduce pain in head but it will be weaker. And a feeling of heavy head is also reduced during the use of the drug.
If you feel coming migraine (heavy head), or you have prodrome, it is necessary to take a pill of Maxalt 10 mg as soon as possible. This is an optimal dose that works in 90% of cases. If a pill does not work, do not take another pill. It may cause the overdose symptoms.
Remember one rule: one outbreak of migraine = one pill. If a patient has new outbreaks within a day, an additional dose of Maxalt 10 mg may be used. Do not take more than 3 pills of Maxalt 10 mg within a day. The interval between the use of the pills should be at least 3-4 hours.
In case of the combined treatment of migraine (during the use of Propranolol or Atenolol), a dose of Maxalt should be lower – 5 mg. Aged patients should also start the treatment from a minimal dose of 5 mg. Then, a dose may be increased if the side effects are absent.
- Patients who have recently had stroke or disorder of cerebral circulation should not take Maxalt. It is necessary to find out a level of the affection of the blood vessels, and then a decision about a safe use of the drug should be made
- If you are taking MAO inhibitors, Maxalt is not used. An additional stimulation of serotonin receptors may cause the symptoms of serotonin syndrome
- Patients under 18 years old should take another medicine to reduce the symptoms of migraine. This rule is applied to pregnant women. They should take safer medicines
- If Experience physiological discomfort after the use of the pill, a medicine should be replaced. You probably have an intolerance of Rizatriptan
The apparent symptoms of the overdose with Maxalt are drowsiness, syncope, bradycardia, vomiting, and urinary incontinence. Severe headache or numbness of face are possible.
In case of these symptoms, it is necessary to see a doctor and do a stomach lavage. Check the blood vessels in the brain and find out if there are some changes.
