Neurontin is a medicine for the treatment of epilepsy and contains Gabapentin. The drug has a special action on the central nervous system, and that is why it differs from most medicines.
Neurontin does not provide a direct effect on GABA receptors but it influences on the concentration of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the structures of the brain. An exact mechanism is unknown but it is known that the drug opens ionic channels through which ions of potassium, calcium and other mineral nutrients pass. Due to this, irritability of neurons is maintained and regulated. In case of certain conditions, an agitation of neurons drops and a risk of the convulsive attack drops.
Taking Neurontin reduces a death of neurons, keeps the activity of the brain, reduces the activity of electric impulses between the cells of the nervous system. A frequency of the attacks is reduced during the treatment of patients with epilepsy, and if a convulsion appeared, it is soft and causes less psychological and physiological discomfort for a patient.
Neurontin is used as a monotherapy of the partial seizures, and for the treatment of neuropathic pain in adults (over 18 years old). Affecting the conductivity of the ionic channels, Gabapentin may reduce the symptoms of the neuropathic pain.
If you have just started taking Neurontin and have not taken other GABA stimulants, it is necessary to stick to a standard scheme of the treatment. It offers to take a pill of Neurontin 300 mg 3 times per day. A total daily dose 900 mg stimulates changes in the central nervous system, lowers the frequency of the seizures, and does not cause any side effects.
However, this dose may be ineffective, and therefore a dose of Neurontin is titrated up. It should be done slowly. The maximal dose is 3600 mg per day (900 mg of Neurontin 3 times per day). This scheme works for patients over 12 years old.
Children at the age of 3 to 12 are prescribed another dosing. The dose is usually based on the body weight: from 10 to 15 mg per 1 kg of the body weight. This dose of Neurontin is divided into 3 parts and is taken with the interval of 8 hours.
The interval between the use of the pills should not be more than 10 hours. Otherwise, seizures may be caused, and therefore the pills should be taken on a regular basis.
- A cessation of the Neurontin use should be slow. In case of the sudden cessation of the treatment, there is a risk of the outbreak of epilepsy and other diseases of the central nervous system
- It is necessary to study a safety of the Neurontin use during the pregnancy. If you are pregnant and are prescribed this medicine, discuss with your doctor how safe this medicine is for you and your baby
- Neurontin is not prescribed patients under 3 years old
- Patients with pancreatic diabetes, acute mental disorders, diseases of kidneys/liver should take the medicine with due care
The obvious symptoms of the overdose are speech disturbance, diarrhea, vomiting, stomachache, blurred vision, fatigue, and poor psychomotor reactions. A symptomatic therapy and slow cessation of Neurontin is prescribed during the overdose. The treatment may be continued in case of the light overdose. It all depends on a patient’s state.
