Proscar is a medicine with antiandrogenic action that contains Finasteride. The ingredient has a unique ability to block a formation of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. It happens by means of blocking 5-alpha reductase enzyme type II.
A reduction of the dihydrotestosterone level is very important in the treatment of the benign prostatic hyperplasia. This androgenic hormone stimulates a growth of the benign tumor. The use of Proscar not only helps to reduce the main symptoms of the benign prostatic hyperplasia, but also reduce a size of the tumor. A reduction of the size of the prostatic gland is accompanied by the increase of the maximal speed of the urine outflow. A man does not have discomfort, and the most important, there is no need to have a surgery.
In case of the systemic administration of the medicine, the results of the treatment occur in 3 months. In 6-7 months, a normal outflow of urine is restored, and the size of the gland is reduced. Then the treatment is controlled by a doctor, if needed.
Proscar effectively copes with its task even at mono-therapy. But in case of the severe form of the benign prostatic hyperplasia, the additional medical products are prescribed (blockers of alpha1-adrenergic receptors). Finasteride does not interact with other medical products, and therefore a combined therapy usually goes without side effects.
Regardless of the therapy type, men should stick to one daily dose of Proscar 5 mg. Proscar 5 mg is used once per day, at the same time. Food does not influence on the bioavailability of Finasteride, and therefore the pills may be taken even during or after meals.
The therapy takes a long period – at least 6 months. In 6 months, if the required result was achieved, a maintaining dose of Proscar 1 mg may be used. It will fix the required result and minimally block the production of dihydrotestosterone. A decision about prolonging the preventive therapy is made by a doctor.
- Before taking Proscar, make sure that a tumor is benign. If the cancerous cells are detected, stop the treatment right away. The use of the drug during prostate cancer may cause a progress of the tumor
- A long-term use of Proscar may cause complications during hepatic failure. Therefore, it is very important to control the functions of the liver
- In case of the obstructive uropathy, the use of Proscar is contraindicated. If the urine outflow has nothing to do with the growth of the glandular tissue, it is necessary to make sure that the use of Finasteride will not cause complications
- Proscar is not prescribed men under 18 years old and women
Data of the medical tests confirm that the overdose of Proscar is impossible. The drug is well tolerated and is absolutely safe for men. But in rare cases, a sensation to Finasteride may be high, so that the overdose may happen during the increase of the maximal dose by 3 or 4 times.
The obvious signs of the overdose are vomiting, allergic reaction (edema, skin itching, urticaria), and dyspepsia. In case of these symptoms, a daily dose may be reduced in order to remove the side effects.
