Valium is widely used in medicine due to its broad action:
An active ingredient Diazepam added to Valium is responsible for these effects. This ingredient is a tranquilizer of benzodiazepine class. The mechanism of the action consists in the action on benzodiazepine receptors that increase an inhibiting action of gamma-aminobutyric acid in all parts of the central nervous system. In other words, the activity of neurons becomes slower after the use of the drug, and a transfer of the nerve impulses is reduced.
A pharmacological action of Valium touches not only important parts of the central nervous system but also influences on the functions of the brain. Moreover, an agitation of the subcortical structures of the brain is reduced, and spinal polysynaptic reflexes become slower.
Due to the broad action, Valium is used in different fields of the medicine for the treatment and prevention of anxious disorders, insomnia, dysphoria, increased agitation, muscle spasms and convulsions, psychosomatic disorders, and others. Moreover, the drug helps to relieve a course of the alcohol abstinent syndrome.
If you have never taken benzodiazepines, the treatment must be started from a minimal dose. It is recommended to take 5 mg of Valium 2 times per day even during severe disorders of the central nervous system. If the side effects do not appear within 10-14 days from the beginning of the treatment, a dose may be increased.
Patients who do not have contraindications for the use are allowed to take up to 30 mg of Valium per day. A daily dose is divided into 3 times and is taken with the interval of 8 hours. The last part of the daily dose is taken 30-60 minutes before sleeping in order to easily fall asleep.
The treatment is continued till the symptoms of the disease completely disappear. If you see a decrease of the effect during the use of 30 mg per day after a short treatment – 2-3 months, the treatment is gradually stopped. Your body probably have a tolerance to the action of Valium, and so the medicine should be replaced.
- If you are taking Valium, avoid alcohol consumption during the treatment. It increases the action of Diazepam, so that the side effects may appear
- Patients taking hypotensive products should carefully take Valium. Their interaction may increase a hypotensive effect and cause tachycardia
- If alcohol/medical or narcotic intoxication, the use of the drug is contraindicated
- If a patient suffers from severe cardiovascular diseases, bronchial asthma or COPD, epilepsy, take Valium with due care
An overdose with Valium may be dangerous. A severe inhibition of the functions of the central nervous system usually happen during the overdose, and so a human may sleep into a coma. The main signs of the overdose are: confusion, paradoxical excitement, somnolentia, low reaction to painful irritations, deep sleep, inhibition of the heart and respiratory activity. In case of these symptoms, go to a doctor right away.
